It's without doubt the number one question at our Gavà clinic, where many patients come from Castelldefels and Viladecans: does getting a dental implant hurt? The short answer is no, it shouldn't. Most patients tell us afterwards that it was easier than an extraction. Here's why, and what you'll feel at each stage.
During surgery: local anaesthetic
Before starting we apply local anaesthetic exactly where the implant will go. The area goes completely numb, so during the procedure you'll only feel pressure or a slight vibration, never sharp pain. If you feel anything at any point, just raise your hand and we'll stop and top up the anaesthetic.
Placing a single implant is usually a short procedure. Planning it properly with a CBCT scan lets us go straight to the right position and work with minimally invasive techniques, which means less swelling afterwards.
If you're afraid of the dentist
Fear is very common and there's nothing wrong with admitting it. Tell us at the first visit: we'll explain each step calmly, go at your pace and, for very anxious patients, consider sedation options.
After surgery: what's normal
When the anaesthetic wears off it's normal to notice:
- Mild discomfort in the area, controlled with the usual painkillers we recommend.
- Some swelling, usually greatest on the second or third day, then going down.
- Occasionally a small bruise on the gum or cheek, which disappears on its own.
Most patients get back to normal the next day. If we've placed several implants or done a bone graft, swelling may be a little more and it's worth planning a couple of days' rest.
When to contact us
- If the pain gets worse after 3–4 days instead of better.
- If you have a fever or the swelling keeps growing.
- If bleeding doesn't stop after biting on a gauze for a few minutes.
Tips for a quick recovery
- Cold: apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your face, on and off, on the first day.
- Food: soft and lukewarm; avoid very hot, spicy and hard food for the first few days, and don't chew on that side.
- Rinsing: don't rinse hard for the first 24 hours.
- Smoking: avoid it. It delays healing and is one of the main risks for the implant.
- Hygiene: thorough but gentle, following our instructions.
- Medication: take it as prescribed, even if you don't feel pain.
And in the long term? Can you feel the implant?
Once integrated into the bone and with the crown fitted, an implant doesn't hurt and can't be felt: you bite and clean it like any other tooth. What matters is keeping good hygiene and coming to check-ups, because the main threat to an implant is inflammation of the surrounding gum (peri-implantitis).
