Many parents think orthodontics is something for teenagers. However, some bite problems are treated much better while the child is still growing. This is what we call early or interceptive orthodontics. Dr Lorena Rosado, paediatric dentist at our Gavà clinic, explains when it's advisable and what the benefits are.
What is interceptive orthodontics?
It's a type of orthodontics focused on guiding the growth of the jaws and correcting bite problems at an early age, usually between 6 and 10. At that age the bones are still developing and can be guided with simple appliances, something that's no longer possible in an adult.
It isn't about straightening teeth «to look nice», but about correcting the foundation: the size and position of the jaws, the space for permanent teeth and the habits that deform the mouth.
At what age should it be checked?
We recommend a first orthodontic check-up at around age 6, when the first permanent molars come in. At that visit we assess whether there's a problem worth treating now or whether it's better to wait and monitor.
Signs your child may need it
- Difficulty chewing or biting.
- Mouth breathing, snoring or sleeping with the mouth open.
- Thumb sucking beyond age 5 or prolonged dummy use.
- Crowded or misplaced teeth.
- Crossbite: upper teeth bite inside the lower ones.
- Open bite: front teeth don't meet when closing.
- A lower jaw that is very forward or very far back.
- Very early or very late loss of baby teeth.
Benefits of starting early
Many parents from Gavà, Castelldefels and Viladecans bring their children to our clinic because early treatment:
- Can avoid complex surgery or extractions in the future.
- Shortens or simplifies teenage orthodontics, or even avoids it.
- Creates space so permanent teeth come in properly.
- Corrects habits before they cause permanent damage.
- Reduces the risk of knocks and fractures to very prominent teeth.
Which appliances are used?
It depends on the problem. The most common are:
- Palatal expanders, to widen a narrow upper jaw.
- Removable appliances the child puts in and takes out.
- Space maintainers when a baby tooth is lost too early.
- Appliances to correct habits such as thumb sucking or tongue position.
In some cases we work with other professionals, such as speech therapists or ENT specialists, if the problem is related to breathing or speech.

Frequently asked questions
If they have orthodontics as a child, won't they need braces later?
In some cases not. In others a second phase is needed in adolescence, but it's usually shorter and simpler.
Do children's appliances hurt?
No. For the first few days they may feel pressure or find talking a little harder, but they adapt quickly.
What if we wait until they're older?
Some bone problems can no longer be corrected with orthodontics once growth has finished and may require more complex treatment.
