If you're thinking about straightening your teeth, you are probably wondering which is better: invisible orthodontics or braces. There is no single answer: both systems work very well, but each suits a different type of case and patient. At our Gavà clinic, which also sees patients from Castelldefels and Viladecans, we assess each case individually. Here are the keys to deciding.
How each system works
Invisible orthodontics
It consists of a series of clear, removable aligners, custom-made from a 3D scan of your mouth. Each aligner moves the teeth a little and is changed about every two weeks. At Somriures we work with QuickSmile, a Spanish aligner system with virtual planning: before starting you see a simulation of how your smile will look.
Braces
These are small pieces bonded to the teeth and joined by an arch wire. The orthodontist adjusts the wire at regular check-ups. They can be metal or aesthetic (ceramic or sapphire), which are more discreet because they blend with the tooth colour.
Point-by-point comparison
Aesthetics and discretion
Invisible orthodontics clearly wins: aligners are transparent and barely noticeable when you talk or smile. Aesthetic braces are more discreet than metal ones, but they are still visible up close.
Comfort
Aligners have no wires or parts that rub, so they rarely cause sores. With braces it is normal to notice rubbing in the first days and after each adjustment, although the mouth soon gets used to it.
Food
With aligners no food is off limits: you take them out to eat and brush before putting them back in. With braces it's best to avoid hard or sticky foods (nuts, sweets, chewing gum) that can pop a bracket off.
Hygiene
Because they are removable, aligners let you brush and floss normally. Braces trap more plaque and need interdental brushes and more patience when cleaning.
Commitment
This is the big difference. Aligners only work if they are worn 20–22 hours a day: if you take them out too much, treatment is delayed. Braces are fixed, so they work all day without depending on you. That's why, for children or people who find it hard to be consistent, we sometimes recommend braces.
Check-ups
With aligners, check-ups are usually every 6–8 weeks. With braces they tend to be somewhat more frequent, to adjust the wire.
Type of case
Today's aligners treat everything from mild crowding to many complex malocclusions. In some very severe cases or with difficult rotations, braces are still the most precise tool. We assess this at the initial study.
How long does each treatment take?
It depends mainly on the case, not the system. As a guide, orthodontics takes on average 12 to 24 months. With QuickSmile, the average is around 9–14 months, although complex cases can take longer. The treatment plan gives you a specific estimate.
And afterwards? Retention
Whatever the system, at the end you need to wear retainers so the teeth don't move back. It's as important a part of treatment as the orthodontics itself.
So which should I choose?
- Choose invisible orthodontics if you want discretion, want to keep eating everything and are consistent with wearing time.
- Choose braces if you'd rather not have to remember anything, if your case is especially complex or if it's for a child.
At the free first visit we do the study and tell you honestly which option suits you best.
Frequently asked questions
Do you offer Invisalign?
No. We work with QuickSmile aligners, which work in a similar way: clear, removable aligners planned in 3D.
Does one option hurt more than the other?
Neither really hurts. With both you'll feel pressure for the first days after each change or adjustment.
Can adults have orthodontics?
Yes, there is no age limit as long as gums and bone are healthy.
